To continue the theme of cleansing my mouth out, flossing once a day only seemed like the appropriate goal for week ten. I like to think I fall into place as average in this category although the truth is it is probably less than that. Even falling into the average category here apparently is far too little or the joke to the left just wouldn't make sense.
My mom worked as a dental assistant long before I was born but this job always stayed with her in a sense that she was always very persistent when it came to us taking care of our teeth. The only problem for a kid is that taking care of teeth comes in on the fun scale right along with timeout and homework. Candy, NFL blitz and running wildly hyper around the house with your sister before bedtime most certainly take precedent to a five minute scrubbing and flossing session.
Many of my goals and habitual changes thus far have focused around preventative healthcare, a wonderful term and practice. Eat a healthy, balanced, proportional diet and help yourself prevent obesity and diabetes. Take care of your teeth and help yourself stay away from gum surgeries and costly dental work. There are many more. The odd part about the term preventative medicine to me is thlikeat it is so new. So what did people use to do to stay healthy? Quite possibly before the creation of things like Twinkies, Ding Dongs and Mallow Cups people just ate foods that were less processed and more natural. This brings me back to the saying "eat your colors." There are an army of fruits and vegetables that can help to prevent bacteria build up in the mouth and help to strengthen and whiten your teeth. Just check out either of these articles! I'd even be willing to bet that eating some of those same things will probably help my hand heal up faster as well. Commence, week 10!
Week 10 Update
It seems that flossing is sort of like sweeping the floor. If you want to wait a while and find out all the junk that builds up well it might feel pretty rewarding cleaning it up because you will notice a big difference. The most effective way though is to just keep things clean and then you just feel good about it all the time.
This week went by relatively quickly without any hiccups. The cursing tally was about half of what it was last week which is something I did not expect to change as fast as it has. I've also noticed that in making an effort to stop for some reason I notice a lot more when other people use these words now.
Looking at my list to pick out my goal for week 11 I realized that I am now reaching a point in the year where my life will be taking very sudden turns. Some of them will be exciting and some will be very hard to get used. It has left me in some combination of an excited, anxious and scared mood. Am I ready for my free time to be drastically reevaluated and sorted into new habits? Am I ready to live without all the amenities that I am so used to having at the click of a finger? I'm not going to pretend that I'm 100% gung ho about giving up all these things. However, I am 100% gung ho about doing something hard for myself every day and staying committed to my goals because I know looking back at the end of this year, a lot of the things that seem hard now will seem so silly and small 8 months from now. Carry on . . week 11 . .
