I find a certain wildness in beer. I had my first one on my 21st birthday with my dad and throughout the past seven years I've had some interesting times with beer, some positive and some . . . well not so much. I'll not sit and write a big lengthy blog telling of all these stories yet instead I'd like to focus on the wildness.
I believe we all have wild ideas in our heads. Some people call them dreams, some call them crazy, but I believe we all have them. I won't share my wild ideas on this blog but perhaps if you have sat at a bar downtown with me in the past few years you might know some of them. This brings me to the main reason I am going to stay away from beer for the rest of 2014.
Yes it is unhealthy. Loads of carbs, not good for the liver and it impairs your natural state of being. These things aside, beer sort of makes anything you are doing feel wilder. I think it is this part that is the most dangerous. When from the sip of a can you can feel wild going about doing just about anything, why would you need to go in search of wildness? Why would you need to plan adventure when you have it in a bottle?
I've shared my plans for adventure with the right amount of people and I am no longer going to let beer subdue my natural wildness. I'm going to focus, I'm going to train, I'm going to plan, I'm going to learn and I'm going to start chasing. Chasing my dreams.

End of Week 13 Update
I'm not going to pretend like it was easy. Working in an environment where you serve beer to people constantly in the middle of a town that has beer taps flowing constantly it is not easy to go from drinking beer to not drinking beer at all. I did it though. Wine is still on my list of available liquids for the time being but all in good time that will be out the door as well. There is one thing that made it all worth it. The picture above. If I had gone about my regular Monday routine of working 12 hours and then having a few beers I would not have gotten up for this wonderful sunrise on Tuesday. I watched it with a herd of eight deer at the highest point in Blacksburg. I set my camera up and took a series of 100 time lapse photographs. Its pretty fun to watch. You can see the herd of deer move down through the field towards the trees and just as the sun came over the mountain they camouflaged themselves against the brown of a long winter. It was quite beautiful to watch nature at work.
I then drove back towards Blacksburg and watched as all the people hurriedly drove past, slammed on their brakes, tightened their ties, and finished their makeup in their rear view mirrors. The people and the deer seemed to really all be doing the same thing this morning. Camouflaging themselves. The only difference was it was the people that were camouflaging themselves from nature, the deer were camouflaging themselves with nature. I know one thing for sure, that I'd rather be a part of it then not because in the end, guess who wins?
